How it came together

When I got on the phone with Larissa in November of 2023, I wasn’t too sure where we were going yet. All I knew was that we wanted what feels like an intimate backyard wedding with Italian and vintage touches and honestly I had a really good feeling. Our chat was awesome and it was so good to get to know her vision and talk through how we could make it happen. We covered the budget and what to expect on the day of. We got into the seasonal flowers available. Green was a favourite and we talked about limey hydrangeas, soft butter yellow and dusty rose touches. Also her pinterest board was perfection and it gave us a lot to talk about. All the drippy amaranth had us swooning. Intimate, contemporary and ethereal are some more descriptors I felt after seeing the pinterest board.

Pick your moments

One of my go to pieces of advice for couples is to decide on a place to use flowers as a visually impactful “special moment”. Rather than trying to stretch a budget to do everything, pick a place that is meaningful for you and invest in it. Whether that’s the ceremony piece and investing in that intimate moment as a couple or having a sculptural moment in the reception to be enjoyed by family and friends, having a piece that wows everyone really sets the tone. Flowers don’t just look pretty, they bring energy to a space so rather than just trying to get flowers everywhere as florists we want to find the vision and create atmosphere.

The wow piece

Larissa and Mark decided on a floral wow piece that would greet guests as they came into the tent. They wanted it to be enjoyed by all of their guests and to usher in the night festivities. Madison was inspired and used hydrangeas and amaranth to create interesting shapes and textures. It was unique, it was singular but tied together our dusty rose and green assignment. Larissa found the perfect pillars to bring in the Italian flair and we thought it all worked perfectly.

Doing what we love

One of my favourite things about working with Larissa and Mark was their trust in us as florists. We got to know their taste (Larissa sent over the mood board of the century) but ultimately details were left up to us and that feels like the ultimate compliment. It also allowed us to stretch into our craft. One of my favourite pieces to design ever came from this trust. The head table piece was a last minute addition. Larissa and I came up with the budget and general amount of flowers we would be using, but the rest was to be a surprise. When the flowers arrived at the farm, I fell into the flow and came up with a rolling green hydrangea table runner. Linking the bud vase florals on the guests tables with the calla lilies from her bridal and bridesmaid bouquets, it felt like an intimate and unique piece of art that tied everyone together. I really can’t express how grateful I feel to Larissa and Mark for their trust and getting to work on their special day. We also used our vintage inspired ceramics by local artist Heather Jefferys @handfulof_ for the signing table arrangements. Seeing the photos come back from Jo Photo Weddings and all the work put in by the planning team at Dream Big really made for a perfect wedding.
